DIRECTORATE OF HIGHER SECONDARY EDUCATION
NOTIFICATION
PREFACE

In accordance with the National Education Policy of 1986 it was decided to delink Pre-degree from Universities and to introduce Higher Secondary Course in Kerala. The new department of Higher Secondary Education was started in the academic year 1990-1991 with 32 Government Higher Secondary Schools. Over a period of 15 years, it developed in to a major Department with 699 Government Higher Secondary Schools,523 Government Aided Higher Secondary School and 439 Unaided Higher Secondary Schools. The number of batches sanctioned is 5502, providing 275100 seats. Part III optional subjects are categorized in to three groups namely science, Humanities, and Commerce. There are 9 subject combinations in Science, 26 in Humanities abd 6 in Commerce.

The course aims at the total personality development of students. The co-curricular components is given prime significance. New schemes like Career Guidance abd Counseling, and Kalakshethra have been introduced. The Department has got a vibrant National Service Scheme which won the State Award for the best NSS in the state

Quality improvement of Higher Secondary Course will be the most inprotant concern of the Department during the current academic year. All Principals, Teachers, and Managers are reueasted to co-operate with the Department in our efforts to improve the quality of education.

Eligibility for Admission :

1. All candidates who have passed the SSLC or equivalent examination are eligible for admission.
2. Candidate seeking admission to the first year class should not have completed 20 years of age as on Ist June of the year of admission. However relaxation in age limit to the extent of 2 years will be allowed in the case of Deaf and Blind candidate from Deaf and Blind schools,relaxation of age to the extent of five years is allowed subject to production of proper medical certificate.

Fee Concession :

1.SC/ST/OEC Kudumbies abd Christian converts from SC/ST/OEC who are bona fide subjects of the Kerala State are eligible for full fee concession and stipend. They will have to produce at the time of admission a certificate of nativity and certificate of community, if community has not been specified in the SSLC.
2.Applicants belonging to the backward communities who are bonafide subjects of Kerala are eligible for full fee concession provided the annual income of the both thier parents or guardian does not exceed Rs. 20,000 .

Applicants who come under I and 2 above will have to produce at the time of admission, the following certificates .
i) Certificate of Income (SC/ST/kudumbies and Christian converts from SC/ST students need not procuce the income certificate)
ii) Certificate of community issued by tahasildar or a higher office in the case of SC/ST/STS; by village in the case SEBC.
iii) Certificate of Nativity .

Educational Concessions to Forward Community Students

Students belonging to socially and Educationally Backward Classes Whose annual family income does not exceed Rs. 20,000 are eligible for full fee concession. Students belonging to other communities whose family income is within the above limits are also legible for fee concession.

The medium of instruction is English.
